The Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOGP) has issued a firm rebuttal to recent claims credited to the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) suggesting that the Ogoni people are part of the Ijaw nation.
MOSOGP described the assertion as false, misleading, and historically indefensible, stressing that the Ogoni nationality remains a distinct ethnic group with its own unique identity, culture, and political history.
According to the group, Ogoni people have, over centuries, maintained a separate and clearly defined heritage that cannot be merged into any broader ethnic classification for political convenience or propaganda purposes.
MOSOGP stated that the Ogoni ethnic nationality is well recognised in Nigeria and internationally, adding that any attempt to redefine the Ogoni people under another ethnic umbrella amounts to a deliberate distortion of facts.
The group warned that such claims could inflame ethnic tensions and undermine peaceful coexistence in the Niger Delta region, calling on the IYC and other stakeholders to exercise restraint and respect the cultural boundaries of indigenous nationalities.
MOSOGP reaffirmed that Ogoni people remain Ogoni by origin, history, and identity, insisting that no organisation has the authority to rewrite their ethnic status.
The group urged the public to disregard the claim, emphasizing that Ogoni identity is non-negotiable and cannot be subjected to political narratives.
