The United States and Israel launched coordinated military strikes on Iran on Saturday, marking a significant escalation in tensions across the Middle East and raising concerns of a broader regional conflict.

Israeli officials described the operation as “pre-emptive,” while U.S. President Donald Trump characterized it as the beginning of “major combat operations” aimed at dismantling Iran’s missile and nuclear programs. Trump said the actions were taken in response to what he described as an existential threat posed by the Iranian government. In public remarks, he also urged Iranians to “take over your government,” signaling support for political change in Tehran.

Explosions were reported in several Iranian cities, including the capital, Tehran. Smoke was seen rising from multiple sites reportedly linked to military or government facilities. Iranian authorities have not yet released official casualty figures or a detailed assessment of the damage.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel’s objective was to neutralize threats posed by Iran and its regional network of allies. Israeli officials indicated that the operation targeted infrastructure associated with missile development and other strategic capabilities.

Iran responded with missile and drone attacks aimed at Israeli territory and U.S. military installations in the Gulf region. Air defense systems in Israel intercepted several incoming projectiles, though explosions were reported in northern areas.

In Qatar, missiles were reportedly intercepted near Al Udeid Air Base, a key U.S. military facility. Explosions were also reported in Bahrain, home to the headquarters of the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet. In the United Arab Emirates, air defenses intercepted incoming missiles over Abu Dhabi, though at least one civilian was reported killed by falling debris. Additional reports indicated attempted strikes in Kuwait and other areas hosting U.S. forces.

Iranian state and semi-official media outlets, including Fars and Tasnim, described the attacks as retaliation against what they called American and Israeli aggression and pledged further response if hostilities continue.

Several Gulf countries, including Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait, temporarily closed their airspace as a precaution. Israel implemented emergency measures nationwide amid concerns of additional attacks.

The developments represent one of the most serious direct confrontations between the United States, Israel, and Iran in recent years. Analysts warn that further escalation could draw in regional allies and proxy groups, increasing the risk of a wider and prolonged conflict.

Casualty figures and the full extent of the damage remain unclear as military operations and diplomatic responses continue.
