In a dramatic turn of events at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters, activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore didn’t hold back on his trademark sarcasm today as he addressed the departure of the controversial former Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
“I stopped by the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters today to see illegal IGP Kayode Egbetokun, and was told he was in to work, likely gathering his belongings, since nothing lasts forever,” Sowore quipped, taking a thinly-veiled jab at Egbetokun’s turbulent tenure.
This comes on the heels of a court decision in which the former IG was ordered to pay Sowore ₦30 million in damages for the illegal declaration of the activist as wanted. The court ruling marked a significant legal defeat for Egbetokun, who was today officially sacked and replaced by the new IGP, Tunji Disu.
Political watchers and social media users alike have been quick to point out the poetic timing: the same man who wielded the full weight of the police against a citizen has now faced the transient nature of power firsthand.
Sowore, known for his sharp wit and fearless activism, didn’t stop at the mocking remark, but his words alone have set social media ablaze, reinforcing a simple truth: power is temporary, accountability is forever.
Stay tuned for more updates as the new IGP, Tunji Disu, assumes command and sets the tone for the next era of policing in Nigeria.
