As part of its mandate to spotlight and celebrate exceptional sons and daughters of the Niger Delta region, NigerDelta Voice this week journeys into the historic riverine communities of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, to honour one of Africa’s most celebrated screen legends, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, as our NigerDelta Voice Personality of the Week for this weekend, Saturday, February 14, 2026.

Omotola Jalade Ekeinde remains one of Nigeria’s most influential cultural ambassadors, a globally recognised actress, humanitarian, and advocate whose achievements continue to inspire millions across Africa and beyond.

EARLY LIFE AND BACKGROUND

Omotola Jalade Ekeinde is of Ondo State origin, specifically from Ilaje Local Government Area, a prominent riverine region in the Niger Delta belt. Although she was born and raised in Lagos State, her roots trace back to the coastal communities of Ondo.

Her family background reflects a disciplined upbringing shaped by hardworking parents. Omotola grew up with her parents and two younger brothers, Tayo and Bolaji Jalade. Her mother, Oluwatoyin Jalade (nÊe Amori Oguntade), worked with J.T Chanrai Nigeria, while her father, Oluwashola Jalade, was employed with the YMCA and later the Lagos Country Club.

Tragedy struck early in her life, as her father reportedly died when she was about 12 years old, an experience that shaped her resilience and determination.

In recognition of her cultural heritage and contributions to the entertainment industry, Omotola was later honoured with a chieftaincy title in Ondo State.  In 2013, the Oba of Ondo Kingdom, Oba Victor Kiladejo, conferred the prestigious title on her.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

Omotola began her education at Chrisland School, Opebi (1981–1987), and later attended Oxford Children School in 1987. She also studied at Santos Layout before proceeding to Command Secondary School, Kaduna (1988–1993).

She had a brief academic stint at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) before completing her tertiary education at the Yaba College of Technology, where she studied Estate Management between 1996 and 2004.

Reports indicate she initially desired a career in business management, but while awaiting academic results, she ventured into modelling to sustain herself financially—an early step that would later open the door into Nollywood.

CAREER AND MEDIA PRESENCE

Omotola Jalade Ekeinde rose to fame as one of Nollywood’s most recognisable faces, earning acclaim for her exceptional performances across multiple genres.
Beyond acting, she also maintained a public media presence through her writing. She once ran a regular column in OK! Nigeria Magazine titled "Omotola’s Diary", where she shared reflections on life, family, career, and personal experiences.
Her influence has remained strong for decades, earning her both local and international recognition.

On November 5, 2013, she received the Ebony Vanguard Award at the Music Video and Screen Awards (MVISA) in Birmingham, England.

AWARDS AND NOMINATIONS

Omotola’s career has been decorated with multiple honours spanning decades.

In 1997, she made history by winning major awards at The Movie Awards (THEMA) for her role in Mortal Inheritance, clinching:

In 2017, she won multiple recognitions for her performance in Alter Ego, including:

Her consistency and dominance have kept her among the most celebrated Nollywood stars of her generation.

HUMANITARIAN AND PHILANTHROPIC ACTIVITIES

Beyond entertainment, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde has built a solid reputation as a humanitarian and global advocate.
In 2005, she became a United Nations World Food Programme Ambassador, participating in humanitarian missions to Sierra Leone and Liberia.

She has supported youth empowerment and women-focused development initiatives, including organisations such as Charles Odii’s SME100 Africa.

Omotola has also been active in international humanitarian campaigns, participating in the global Walk the World Project, including campaigns in Liberia alongside former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

Her human rights efforts are largely driven by her NGO initiative known as the Omotola Youth Empowerment Program (OYEP), a platform credited with empowering hundreds of young people through empowerment walks, conventions, and outreach programmes.

In 2010, she joined the Save the Children UK campaign tagged "Rewrite The Future", lending her voice to child welfare advocacy.

In 2011, she became an Amnesty International campaigner, contributing to awareness campaigns across Africa. She participated in advocacy campaigns in Sierra Leone focused on maternal mortality.

She also took part in a major 2012 Niger Delta advocacy campaign, where she publicly urged Shell plc and the Nigerian government to accept responsibility for oil pollution, calling on them to “own up, clean up, pay up” for the environmental damage caused by oil spills in the Niger Delta.

In June 2020, Omotola extended her humanitarian work to East Africa, visiting an orphanage home in Tanzania run by Tanzania Mitindo House, an organisation supporting HIV-infected children, alongside Tanzanian actress Wema Sepetu.

In further public advocacy, Omotola joined the #SmokeFreeNollywood campaign ahead of the 2021 World No Tobacco Day, where she and other Nollywood stars pledged to stop smoking in movie scenes due to its negative influence on children. The campaign was backed by the US-based non-profit organisation Tobacco-Free Kids, alongside a sub-Saharan strategy firm, Gatefield.
