The lawmaker representing West Virginia’s 2nd District in the United States Congress, Rep. Riley Moore, has stated that there has been no serious discussion about dividing Nigeria since he began raising concerns over the persecution of Christians in the country.

Moore, who recently visited Nigeria on a fact-finding mission, said he held several high-level meetings with Nigerian government officials, church leaders, humanitarian organisations, and internally displaced persons (IDPs) in order to gain firsthand understanding of the worsening insecurity affecting Christian communities.

In a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday, the Congressman dismissed claims suggesting that discussions around Nigeria’s division were being promoted in his engagements.

“In my discussions, the idea of dividing the country has not come up in any serious way. Efforts to embolden separatists hurt Christians in Nigeria – especially in the North and Middle Belt,” Moore wrote.
According to him, any move that destabilises Nigeria would only strengthen terrorist groups and worsen the insecurity facing Christians and other vulnerable populations across the country and the African continent.

“A destabilised Nigeria would embolden terrorists and make Christians less safe in Nigeria and across the continent,” he added.

Moore said he remains committed to supporting efforts aimed at protecting Nigerians affected by violence and insecurity.

“I remain committed to working to save the lives of our brothers and sisters in Christ – and for that matter, all Nigerians – suffering from the instability wrought by terrorists throughout Nigeria,” he stated.

US, Nigeria Enter Security Cooperation Agreement

The U.S. Congressman also revealed that the United States and Nigeria have entered into a new security cooperation agreement, describing it as a major step towards addressing terrorism and violent attacks in the country.

He noted that the agreement is expected to strengthen bilateral ties and deepen collaboration between both nations in tackling insecurity.

Moore Recounts Shocking Accounts from Benue IDP Camps

Moore’s recent comments come months after he alleged that Fulani and Islamic extremist groups were attacking Christians taking refuge inside IDP camps in Benue State.

In December 2025, he told Fox News that displaced Christians were still being targeted even after fleeing their communities.

“Fulani, these Islamic radicals, are attacking the IDP camps. They are attacking them in these IDP camps,” Moore said.

The Congressman was part of a delegation reportedly sent by U.S. President Donald Trump to investigate reports of Christian persecution in Nigeria.
During the visit to Benue State, Moore and other members of the delegation met with survivors of violent attacks who narrated their experiences.

Moore described the testimonies as deeply disturbing, saying the stories he heard left him shocked.

“It was really shocking. The stories that we heard, the imagery, it was… I’ve never witnessed anything like that in my life,” he said.

He recounted meeting a woman who lost her entire family, including five children who were allegedly killed before her eyes.

“She was pregnant at the time, and she was able to escape. She had that child in an Internally Displaced Persons camp. You could just see her soul had literally left her body,” Moore stated.

He also recalled another case involving a woman who reportedly lost her husband and two daughters during an attack, adding that her unborn child was also killed.

“These Islamic terrorists murdered her unborn child and took it right out of her. It’s beyond words,” he said.

Moore said there are countless similar stories from victims across Nigeria, stressing the need for urgent international attention and coordinated security efforts.
