Bayelsa State is boiling with anger and fear following the horrific killing of a 24-year-old man, Patrick Peresuodei, who allegedly died after days of brutal beating and torture involving personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and other security operatives.

Patrick’s death has ignited widespread condemnation, renewed fears of reprisal attacks, and urgent calls by lawyers and civil society organisations for an independent, transparent investigation into what many have described as yet another chilling case of security-agency brutality in the state.

Patrick and his younger brother, Destiny, were allegedly arrested in the early hours of January 15, 2026, following a complaint by a controversial social media critic, Bodmas Kemepadei. According to Destiny, the arrest was not only unlawful but violently executed.

Destiny alleged that at about 5:45 a.m., Bodmas arrived at their residence with other youths and four NSCDC officers, stormed the compound, and immediately assaulted Patrick.

“The moment my brother opened the gate, Bodmas started slapping him,” Destiny recounted. “The NSCDC officers joined in. We were beaten and forced into a vehicle.”

Shockingly, the brothers were not taken to a police station, but allegedly driven straight to Bodmas’ residence, where they were tied up, thrown on the floor, and beaten mercilessly for nearly three hours.
“They used planks and machetes on us,” Destiny said. “We were bleeding. It was torture.”

After the prolonged assault, the brothers were reportedly dumped at Operation Puff Alder, a special unit of the Bayelsa State Police Command, where they were detained for several days without formal charges or proper documentation. Destiny alleged that torture continued in custody.

“A day before our release, my brother was taken out of the cell for over two hours,” he said. “When they brought him back, he was broken. He couldn’t talk. His body was full of bruises. He was in terrible pain.”

The family rushed Patrick to several public hospitals in Bayelsa before he was referred to tertiary hospitals in Port Harcourt. Struggling to raise funds and with no assistance from the authorities, Patrick’s condition deteriorated rapidly. He died on January 28, reportedly after developing severe breathing complications.

“The police never took my brother to a clinic,” Destiny said bitterly. “Everything was on us.”

The death has triggered intense public outrage, with residents warning that the situation could spiral out of control if justice is not swiftly served. In a 20-minute video now circulating widely, the Bayelsa State Commissioner for Youth Development, Alfred Kemepado Nimizigha, is seen visiting the bereaved family in an attempt to calm tensions. In the footage, Destiny flatly rejected police claims that Patrick had pre-existing injuries before his arrest.

Despite public anger, the Bayelsa State Police Command has denied responsibility. In a statement signed by DSP Musa Mohammed, the Police Public Relations Officer, the command insisted Patrick was already injured when he was handed over to them by NSCDC operatives.

The police claimed Patrick was taken to a police clinic and later released to his relatives on medical advice, insisting the command “should not be dragged” into allegations of murder.

The statement, however, has done little to douse public fury, especially as Destiny accused Operation Puff Alder operatives of direct involvement in the torture — allegations the police have vehemently denied.

The command confirmed it has launched a manhunt for Bodmas Kemepadei and his associates, while urging the public to remain calm.

But for many in Bayelsa, calm is in short supply. Human rights groups insist that Patrick’s death represents a grave abuse of power, demanding the immediate arrest, suspension, and prosecution of all security personnel involved.

As tension thickens across the state, one question echoes loudly:
Who will be held accountable for the life beaten out of Patrick Peresuodei?
