BIOGRAPHY: ROOTED IN THE NIGER DELTA, BORN FOR THE WORLD
Timi Donald Dakolo was born on January 20, 1981, in Accra, Ghana, to a Nigerian father and a Ghanaian mother. His father, Mr. David Dakolo, hails from Gbarantoru in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, firmly rooting Timi’s identity in the Niger Delta. His mother, Norah Kimmy Head, passed away when he was just thirteen — a life-altering loss that profoundly shaped his emotional depth and musical expression.
Although born in Ghana, Timi Dakolo is proudly Nigerian. His early years were marked by sacrifice and love, as he was raised by his grandmother, Ateni Dakolo, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, after his young parents were unable to care for him. His aunt, Susan Larry, also played a defining role, nurturing his talent and encouraging his passion for music.
It was in church — the cradle of many great Nigerian voices — that Timi’s extraordinary vocal gift first emerged. By the age of twelve, he was already performing publicly. His rise continued with Purple Love, a music group that dominated the Port Harcourt music scene in the early 2000s, setting the foundation for his national breakthrough.
