The Nigerian Army has recorded a significant peace breakthrough in Cross River State following the voluntary surrender of scores of Niger-Delta militants in Akpabuyo Local Government Area.
The militants reportedly laid down their arms under the Cross River State Government–backed amnesty programme, aimed at restoring peace, curbing criminal activities, and fostering sustainable development in troubled coastal communities.
According to security sources, the surrender took place during a coordinated engagement involving the Nigerian Army, other security agencies, and community stakeholders. The former militants handed over assorted weapons and ammunition, signalling their readiness to embrace peace and reintegrate into society.
Military authorities described the development as a major boost to ongoing efforts to stabilise the Niger Delta region, noting that the surrender was achieved through dialogue, confidence-building measures, and sustained non-kinetic operations rather than the use of force.
They commended the Cross River State Government for its commitment to peace through the amnesty initiative, which provides rehabilitation, vocational training, and economic empowerment opportunities for repentant militants.
Community leaders in Akpabuyo Local Government Area also welcomed the development, expressing optimism that the return to peace would enhance security, encourage economic activities, and improve livelihoods across the coastal communities.
The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its resolve to maintain security in the region while supporting government-led initiatives that promote peace, reconciliation, and long-term stability in the Niger Delta.
