Amassoma community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State has been thrown into deep mourning and outrage following the controversial death of Patrick Peresuodei, a young indigene whose demise has ignited anger, grief, and urgent calls for justice.
What began as a social media disagreement has now escalated into a full-blown public controversy, pitching sharply opposing narratives against each other and raising disturbing questions about intolerance, abuse of influence, police conduct, and the value of human life.
At the centre of the storm is Apostle Bodmas Prince Kemepadei who had been accused of intolerance and abuse of power on the circumstances surrounding the death of the young man.
BOBRAEBIOWEI ACCUSES APOSTLE BODMAS OF INTOLERANCE, ABUSE OF POWER
In a blistering open letter that has since gone viral, Dr. Warri Stephen Bobraebiowei accused Apostle Kemepadei of intolerance, hypocrisy, and misuse of influence, insisting that the incident which culminated in Peresuodei’s arrest was nothing more than a heated exchange of words on social media over religious beliefs.
Bobraebiowei condemned the cleric’s admission that he initiated the arrest, questioning the justification of cyberbullying and threat to life. He dismissed claims of an AK-47 threat as exaggerated and misleading, arguing that the exchange was part of an online supremacy contest rather than a credible threat to life.
He further accused Apostle Kemepadei of routinely engaging in cyberbullying and issuing threats online, describing it as deeply unjust for the cleric to criminalise behaviour he allegedly practices. Bobraebiowei also faulted the narrative portraying the deceased as a hard drug user, asking why such claims were not treated as a health concern rather than grounds for incarceration.
“The boy is dead and can no longer speak for himself,” Bobraebiowei warned, stressing that sweeping the matter under the carpet without an open, transparent investigation would only deepen public mistrust and inflame communal anger.
AMASSOMA YOUTHS ISSUE ULTIMATUM, DEMAND ANSWERS
As tensions rose, the Amassoma Youth Association reportedly issued a three-day ultimatum, demanding clarity, accountability, and justice over the circumstances surrounding Peresuodei’s death. The community insists that silence and half-truths are unacceptable in the face of a young life lost.
APOSTLE BODMAS BREAKS SILENCE, DENIES INVOLVEMENT IN DEATH
Amid mounting pressure, Apostle Bodmas Prince Kemepadei released a lengthy statement, breaking his silence and denying any involvement in the death of Patrick Peresuodei.
Describing the death as “tragic and unfortunate,” the cleric maintained that he never assaulted or harmed the deceased and only sought legal redress. He claimed that Peresuodei had engaged in cyberbullying, criminal defamation, and threats to his life, including alleged references to an AK-47, prompting him to report the matter to the Bayelsa State Police Command.
According to Kemepadei, the deceased was arrested in Amassoma and later exhibited signs of mental instability allegedly linked to hard drug use, which he said predated the arrest. He stated that Peresuodei was granted bail to his family for medical treatment on January 21, 2026, and that he was shocked to later learn of his death through social media accusations against him.
The apostle described allegations of abduction and fatal assault as false and malicious, naming individuals he accused of spreading unverified claims and announcing plans to pursue defamation suits. He insisted he never visited the police station to assault the deceased and said police records could verify his claims.
Declaring his readiness to submit himself to investigation, Kemepadei said he had already given a statement to the police and would cooperate fully with authorities and traditional institutions. He extended condolences to the bereaved family, the Amassoma community, the Ogboin Kingdom, and the wider Ijaw Nation, stressing that “human life is sacred.”
LEGAL PRACTITIONER CONDEMNS KILLING, VOWS TO PURSUE JUSTICE
Adding a powerful legal voice to the growing outrage, Barrister Daumiebi Festus, a legal practitioner and public affairs commentator, strongly condemned the killing of Patrick Peresuodei, describing it as “brutal, barbaric, and utterly condemnable.”
In an emotional statement, Barr. Festus rejected any attempt to trivialise or justify the incident, warning that justice must prevail regardless of the status or influence of those involved.
“I do not know the victim or his family, but I am committed to supporting them to get justice for this dastardly act. This stands condemned,” he declared.
He criticised what he described as self-serving individuals allegedly attempting to justify the act under the guise of activism, warning that actions driven by ego and selfish interest would have consequences.
Barr. Festus also cautioned security agencies against any form of complicity, insisting that no police officer should risk bearing responsibility for what he described as “animal behaviour.” He disclosed that his legal team had already met with the family of the deceased and that four petitions had been prepared for submission to Governor Douye Diri, the Inspector General of Police, the Director of the State Security Service, and the Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police.
“My assurance to the family is simple: the killers of Patrick Peresuodei will be brought to justice,” he vowed.
Invoking Ijaw cultural values, Festus stressed that the act contradicts the very essence of the Ijaw people. “Ijaw means truth. This is an abomination alien to our values and must be condemned by all well-meaning Ijaw leaders,” he said.
COMMUNITY DEMANDS TRANSPARENT, INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION
As grief turns into anger, Amassoma youths and community stakeholders are united in one demand: a transparent, independent investigation into the arrest, detention, release, and death of Patrick Peresuodei.
For a community in mourning, justice is not optional—it is imperative. Until the full truth is uncovered and accountability established, the wounds in Amassoma remain open, and the cry for justice grows louder by the day.
