As part of its enduring mandate to spotlight outstanding sons and daughters of the Niger Delta who have made remarkable impacts locally, nationally, and internationally, NigerDelta Voice this week celebrates the life and legacy of Chief (Dr.) Christopher “Pere” Ajuwa, a pioneering statesman, engineer, businessman, and presidential aspirant whose influence transcended generations.
Born on 23 November 1941 in Gbaranraun, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, the late Pere Ajuwa was a proud son of the Ijaw ethnic nationality. He lived a life defined by service, courage, intellectual depth, and unwavering advocacy for minority rights until his peaceful passing on 31 January 2017 in Port Harcourt after a brief illness.

Chief Ajuwa’s journey of excellence began at Ade Oshodi Primary School (1954–1960), where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate. He proceeded to Stella Maris College, Okitipupa (1961–1964), and later to Government Technical College, Ijebu-Ode, as well as Yaba Trade Centre, Lagos, where he earned a City & Guild Intermediate Certification in 1968.
Driven by a passion for technical mastery, he studied abroad at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, obtaining Advanced Technological Certificates in 1975. He further specialized in Structural Engineering at Worcester University, United Kingdom, becoming a British-certified Technical Structural Engineer in the early 1980s. In 2006, he crowned his academic pursuit with a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Ekiti State University, Nigeria.

Chief Ajuwa began his professional career as a Technician with the Western State Water Corporation, Ibadan in 1969, before serving as an Engineer at the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN) Water Treatment Plant between 1970 and 1972.
Upon returning from further studies abroad, he rose to become Principal Consulting Engineer at SP Group Engineers in 1977, later serving as Chief Civil Engineer at Prefab Overseas Limited. He also established his own firm, Pere Roberto Nigeria Ltd, and went on to build formidable interests in construction, engineering, and petroleum marketing across Nigeria.

Ajuwa’s passion for justice and equity propelled him into public service and politics. In the late 1980s, he was elected President of the Port Harcourt Chamber of Commerce and Industry, where he initiated the first Port Harcourt International Trade Fair, boosting regional commerce and visibility.

He served in Nigeria’s Constituent Assembly in 1989, where he was a strong advocate for minority rights and resource control. A founding member of the Nigeria National Convention (NNC) and later the National Republican Convention (NRC), Chief Ajuwa made history as one of the earliest Niger Delta voices to aspire to Nigeria’s highest office.

He contested the 1993 presidential election under the NRC, later emerged as Presidential Candidate of the Liberal Democratic Party of Nigeria in 2003, and again ran under the Alliance for Democracy in 2007. In 2011, he further demonstrated his commitment to service by contesting for the Bayelsa Central Senatorial seat.

In recognition of his contributions to national development and education, Chief Ajuwa was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) in Business Management by the University of Calabar in April 1995.
He was also deeply respected in traditional circles. The people of Gbaranraun conferred on him the revered title Egbesu XVI of Egbesubiri, acknowledging his leadership and service.

Beyond the Niger Delta, he was honoured with the title Ikemba of Enugu-Uku, reflecting his philanthropy and positive impact across regions.

Chief Christopher Pere Ajuwa married Helen Kemi Olayiwola in 1974 and was blessed with children. Notably, his first daughter, Ebiere Irene Ajuwa-Musa, later served as Bayelsa State Commissioner for Tourism Development, continuing the family’s tradition of public service.

Following his passing, the Bayelsa State Government immortalised his legacy by renaming the major Azikoro Road in his honour. Then-Governor Seriake Henry Dickson described his death as a “monumental loss,” praising his lifelong commitment to the Niger Delta struggle and minority politics.

Chief (Dr.) Christopher “Pere” Ajuwa is remembered as a trailblazer, widely regarded as the first Ijaw man and one of the earliest Niger Delta sons to boldly pursue the Nigerian presidency. His life remains a powerful testament to vision, courage, and service—qualities that continue to inspire young politicians, professionals, and activists across the region.

NigerDelta Voice proudly celebrates him as our Personality of the Week, honouring a legacy that firmly placed the Niger Delta on Nigeria’s political and developmental map.
