Tension is rising across the Ondo State public service following a directive by the Ondo State Civil Service Commission ordering the immediate suspension of civil servants recruited or promoted with certificates obtained through the Satellite Campus system of education.

In a circular widely circulated to all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), the Commission directed accounting officers and heads of service units to identify and suspend affected officers pending further review. The move, according to the Commission, is aimed at sanitising the civil service, eliminating mediocrity, and ensuring that only the “best brains” are engaged in public service.

The directive, however, has triggered widespread anxiety, with thousands of workers now facing an uncertain future. The Satellite Campus system of education, which involves off-campus learning arrangements affiliated with recognised institutions, has for years been widely accepted across Nigeria and used by many working-class Nigerians to upgrade their academic qualifications.

Observers say the policy could result in massive job losses if fully enforced, as a significant number of civil servants reportedly relied on certificates obtained through the Satellite Campus system for recruitment, confirmation, or promotion.

Of particular concern is the fate of over 2,000 teachers recruited into the Ondo State civil service in 2025. It remains unclear whether the new directive will affect recent recruits who presented Satellite Campus certificates during the recruitment process, despite being screened and cleared by relevant government agencies at the time.

Labour unions and civil society groups are expected to react in the coming days, as calls grow for the state government to clarify the scope of the directive and consider the human and social implications of its implementation.

As uncertainty deepens, many affected workers fear that a policy intended to reform the system may instead plunge thousands of families into economic hardship if not carefully reviewed and managed.
