Former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of unlawfully deducting ₦100 billion monthly from Nigeria’s Federation Account without the approval of the National Assembly, describing the alleged action as a serious constitutional breach that could warrant impeachment.
El-Rufai alleged that the deductions have persisted for over 15 months, amounting to approximately ₦1.5 trillion, and were carried out without appropriation by the National Assembly or approval by constitutionally mandated institutions.
Speaking at a recent public engagement, the former governor stated that the 1999 Constitution clearly outlines how funds in the Federation Account are to be managed and shared among the federal, state, and local governments, stressing that no arm of government — including the Presidency — has the authority to unilaterally withdraw funds without legislative backing.
According to him, any sustained and unauthorised deduction from the Federation Account constitutes a grave violation of the constitution, adding that such an infraction, if established, falls within offences for which a sitting president could be impeached.
El-Rufai further claimed that the withdrawals were allegedly justified as security-related spending, but questioned the lack of transparency surrounding the process and the absence of clear improvements in national security despite the magnitude of funds reportedly involved. He therefore called for a forensic audit of the Federation Account to determine how the funds were withdrawn, who authorised the transactions, and how the money was utilised.
The former governor also urged state governors, members of the National Assembly, and oversight institutions to rise above partisan interests and defend constitutional order, warning that silence in the face of such allegations could set a dangerous precedent for executive overreach.
As of the time of filing this report, the Presidency has not issued an official response to the specific allegations. However, the claims have triggered intense debate across political circles, civil society organisations, and social media platforms, with growing calls for the National Assembly to launch an investigation.
The development comes amid heightened political tension ahead of the 2027 general elections, further intensifying scrutiny of the Tinubu administration’s fiscal management and governance practices.
