His Biography
Inetimi Alfred Odon, popularly known as Timaya, was born on August 15, 1980, and hails from Bayelsa State, in Nigeria’s oil-rich Niger Delta region. He was raised by his mother in a modest household, where the harsh realities of life in the creeks—poverty, environmental degradation, youth restiveness, and neglect—formed the background of his childhood.
Timaya’s formative years were shaped by the contradictions of the Niger Delta: land of immense natural wealth, yet plagued by deprivation. These experiences planted in him a deep sense of social consciousness, which would later define his artistic identity.
After his secondary education, Timaya gained admission into Port Harcourt Polytechnic (now Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic), where he studied Banking and Finance. However, his burning passion for music soon overtook his academic pursuit, leading him to leave school and relocate to Lagos—Nigeria’s entertainment nerve centre.
Life in Lagos was unforgiving. Timaya reportedly slept in makeshift shelters and relied on sheer determination while honing his craft. His big break came in 2005 with the release of “Dem Mama”, a powerful protest song inspired by the Odi crisis. The track struck a national chord and immediately positioned Timaya not just as a new artist, but as a cultural narrator of Niger Delta pain and resistance.
Thus, Timayas resilience in the face of adversity in his music 🎼 career is an inspiration to the younger generation of today who want to break through on their music career but faced with a lot of hurdles.
