SUDDEN DEATH OF BAYELSA DEPUTY GOVERNOR SHOCKS THE NATION
By NigerDelta Voice Reporters,
Bayelsa State has been thrown into deep mourning following the sudden death of its Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Oborawharievwo Ewhrudjakpo. The 60-year-old senior government official collapsed abruptly in his office at Government House, prompting an emergency response that ended in tragedy.
Eyewitnesses say Senator Ewhrudjakpo fell ill around midday on Thursday, December 11, 2025, while attending to official duties in his office in Yenagoa. He was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in the state capital, but doctors were unable to revive him and he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
RESPONSE AND OFFICIAL CONFIRMATION
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) confirmed his passing in an official statement, describing the loss as “inexplicable” and a profound blow to both the party and the people of Bayelsa State. Party leaders lauded his integrity, dedication, and long service in public office.
Senior political figures across Nigeria, including Governor Dapo Abiodun, Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum, expressed deep sorrow and extended condolences to Governor Douye Diri, the government, and the people of Bayelsa. Abiodun described Ewhrudjakpo as a “dependable ally” and “a gem” whose service had a lasting impact.
CIRCUMSTANCES OF COLLAPSE
Though authorities have not released a formal medical cause of death, multiple reports suggest that the deputy governor’s sudden collapse may have been linked to a possible cardiac-related emergency, a theory local sources have discussed while awaiting official confirmation.
Security has been tightened around the hospital and Government House as officials and sympathizers continue to arrive, and tributes from political allies, constituents, and citizens have flooded in.
LEGACY AND BACKGROUND
Senator Ewhrudjakpo had served as Bayelsa’s deputy governor since February 2020 and was a respected figure in both state and national politics, with previous experience as a senator and commissioner. His sudden death leaves a leadership gap at the helm of Bayelsa’s government.
