The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has reportedly carried out multiple precision airstrikes on fleeing elements linked to a foiled military coup in the Benin Republic.

According to security analyst and counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, the operation targeted coup plotters attempting to escape from Cotonou in armoured vehicles shortly after loyalist forces in Benin Republic regained control from mutineers loyal to Lt. Pascal Tigri.

Makama, citing credible security sources, said the airstrikes were conducted within a 30-minute window and involved multiple coordinated engagements by NAF fighter jets operating with the full consent of Beninese authorities.

“The operation was meticulously planned and executed. Our objectives were clear: to neutralise fleeing hostile elements, prevent regrouping, and restore stability in coordination with regional partners,” a source was quoted as saying.

The sources added that all phases of the mission strictly adhered to international operational protocols, with deliberate efforts made to minimise civilian casualties while maximising impact on the fleeing insurgent elements.

Residents in parts of Cotonou reportedly heard heavy explosions and observed plumes of smoke rising from targeted areas. Security sources confirmed that several armoured vehicles were disabled and key escape routes blocked, resulting in the deaths of multiple insurgents.

The intervention followed a failed coup attempt allegedly led by Lt. Pascal Tigri, who briefly announced the dissolution of state institutions before loyalist troops overpowered the mutineers. In the aftermath, several key members of the coup faction reportedly attempted to flee southward, prompting Nigeria’s rapid aerial response.

A senior military officer was quoted as saying the Nigerian Air Force remains committed to safeguarding regional security and protecting the sovereignty of neighbouring states.

“Our operations are intelligence-driven, precise, and aimed at preventing any spillover that could threaten our borders,” the officer said.

The coordinated strikes are being described as one of Nigeria’s most decisive cross-border military actions in recent West African history, underscoring Abuja’s resolve to confront destabilising threats before they escalate.
