Adekunle Ajasin University (AAUA) has announced plans to retain and absorb 32 graduating students who earned First Class honours as part of its academic staff development programme.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olugbenga Ige, revealed the decision during a press briefing ahead of the institution’s 14th convocation ceremony, where a total of 5,799 students will be awarded degrees.
According to Prof. Ige, the initiative is aimed at mitigating the brain-drain syndrome in the academic sector by giving outstanding graduates a pathway into academia at AAUA. Under the policy, eligible first-class graduates will be employed as graduate fellows or graduate assistants upon completion of their mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
He explained that this tradition helps the university retain top talents and encourages the development of future academics within Nigeria. Prof. Ige also used the occasion to call for greater government and stakeholder support to address funding challenges facing higher institutions.
Of the 5,799 graduands, 32 bagged First Class honours, 1,444 earned Second Class Upper Division, 3,177 obtained Second Class Lower Division, 582 made Third Class, and 16 graduated with Pass degrees.
The convocation event has also drawn attention from state officials, with Ondo State government representatives encouraging graduates to apply their knowledge toward the state’s development.
