Celebrating Excellence: Prof. Dauphin Dighitoghi Moro - As The NigerDelta Voice Personality of the Week

This weekend, as part of our ongoing mandate to celebrate trailblazing sons and daughters from the Niger Delta region, we are proud to recognize Professor Dauphin Dighitoghi Moro as The NigerDelta Voice Personality of the Week. Prof. Moro is a towering figure whose journey of excellence in academics, research, and leadership is an inspiration to the younger generation and a testament to the indomitable spirit of the Niger Delta.


A Life of Promise Fulfilled: Early Life and Education

Born on June 20, 1964, in Ajapa, a coastal town in Ondo State, Professor Moro’s early life was steeped in prophecy. His parents, deeply rooted in their faith and community, were told that their son would be a great man—prophecies that have been fulfilled in the most remarkable way.

Growing up in a family of intellectuals and devout Christians, Prof. Moro’s academic journey began at L.A Primary School, Bolowou, and continued through St. Mary's U.N.A. Primary School, Methodist High School, Okitipupa, and Ukparama Grammar School. Despite facing numerous challenges, his determination to succeed was unwavering. His academic prowess earned him a place at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), where he graduated with a Second Class Upper Division in Applied Microbiology in 1988. Prof. Moro would go on to complete his Master’s Degree in 1992 and his Ph.D. in Microbiology in 2003 at the University of Ado-Ekiti.


Trailblazing Achievements in Academia and Beyond

Prof. Moro’s career trajectory is a blueprint of academic excellence. He joined Lagos State University (LASU) in 1996 as an Assistant Lecturer and steadily rose through the ranks to become a Professor of Microbiology in 2022. Over the years, he has been a pivotal part of the university’s growth, having served as the Coordinator of Postgraduate Programmes and Head of Department at different times.

His leadership in academia extends beyond the classroom. As the Coordinator of all Postgraduate Programmes in Microbiology from 2018 to 2021, he helped shape the future of countless students in the field. Prof. Moro is a respected member of several prestigious learned societies, including the American Society for Microbiology and the Nigerian Society for Microbiology. His work has earned him recognition at local and international conferences, including a Certificate of Recognition for his outstanding presentation at the 2nd International Conference on Internal Medicine and Hospital Medicine in Dallas, Texas in 2017.


A Legacy of Mentorship and International Recognition

With a heart for mentorship, Prof. Moro has supervised over 400 undergraduate students and more than 20 Master’s students, and is currently guiding four Ph.D. students at LASU and two others at international institutions. His dedication to shaping the next generation of scholars and professionals is evident in his extensive work as an external examiner and reviewer for over 70 international journals.

Prof. Moro's contributions also extend to the corporate world, where he serves as a facilitator at workshops for Senior Managers at the Nigerian Ports Authority. His expertise in Organisational Risk Management, Ports Development, and Creative Strategy Thinking has helped shape the future of Nigeria’s ports industry.


Beyond Academia: A Man of Integrity and Passion

Despite his remarkable achievements, Prof. Moro remains grounded. His hobbies include football, table tennis, reading, and writing. He is also a passionate volunteer pastor, contributing to his community with the same integrity and dedication that have defined his academic and professional life. Prof. Moro’s devotion to his family is equally notable. He is happily married to Mrs. Oluwatoyin Moro and is a proud father to children with promising futures.

From his humble beginnings in Ajapa to becoming a Professor and a respected scholar, his journey is a shining example of what is possible when one pursues excellence with purpose.

As we celebrate him this week, we not only honor his individual achievements but also the spirit of resilience, brilliance, and leadership that defines the people of the Niger Delta. Prof. Moro’s life is a powerful reminder that the Niger Delta is home to some of the brightest minds and most remarkable achievers in the world.
