World Cup Dream Rekindled? Nigeria Eyes Playoff Lifeline as DR Congo Faces Eligibility Storm.

Nigeria’s fading hopes of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup may yet find fresh oxygen, following explosive developments surrounding the eligibility of DR Congo players in the decisive playoff stage of the African qualifiers.

The Super Eagles were heartbreakingly edged out in November after DR Congo triumphed on penalties, sealing Africa’s ticket to the Intercontinental Playoffs. What appeared to be the final whistle on Nigeria’s campaign may now prove to be only a dramatic pause.

Emerging reports indicate that the Congolese camp could be staring down the barrel of FIFA sanctions over allegations of fielding ineligible players during the playoff clash. If upheld, the controversy could dramatically redraw the qualification map and reopen Nigeria’s route to the global showpiece.

At the centre of the storm are claims that as many as six DR Congo players who switched national allegiance failed to fully satisfy FIFA’s eligibility requirements. The allegations suggest that the players did not formally renounce their previous citizenships—an essential condition under Congolese law, which does not permit dual nationality.

Further deepening the intrigue are reports that some of the players involved were over the age of 21 and in possession of European passports at the time of the match, potentially placing them outside the bounds of FIFA’s nationality regulations.

Confirming Nigeria’s official response, the Secretary General of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Dr Mohammed Sanusi, revealed that a formal petition has been lodged with FIFA, challenging the legitimacy of DR Congo’s squad.

“We’re waiting. The Congolese rules say you cannot have a dual citizenship or nationality,” Sanusi stated. “Wan-Bissaka has a European passport, there are some of them that have French passports, some of them Dutch passports. The rules are very clear, and we have submitted our petition.”

Sanusi explained that FIFA’s initial clearance of the players was based on documents presented by the Congolese authorities, but Nigeria believes the world football body may have been misled.

“That’s why FIFA cleared them,” he said. “Once you have passports of your country, you’re eligible as far as FIFA is concerned. But our concern now is that FIFA was deceived into clearing them. It is not FIFA’s responsibility to enforce Congo’s domestic laws. What we are saying is that the process was fraudulent.”

As FIFA deliberates behind closed doors, the Super Eagles wait on the edge of possibility. Should the ruling tilt in Nigeria’s favour—and if the Intercontinental Playoff matches in Mexico have not yet been played—the green-and-white dream could soar once more from the ashes of penalty shootout despair.

For now, Nigeria’s World Cup ambition hangs in the balance, suspended between law, loopholes, and the hope that justice, like football, can still produce a stunning late comeback. ⚽
