The Sowore Foundation has announced plans to usher in the year 2026 with the Kiribo Road Race, a major community-based sporting event scheduled for January 1, 2026.
Omoleye Sowore a former Presidential Candidate of the African Action Congress, (AAC) and a Human Rights Activist hails from Kiribo. Kiribo is a community in Ese-Odo Local Government Area, Ondo State and it is expected to host the event.
According to the organisers, the race is designed to go beyond athletics, serving as a platform to promote discipline, healthy living, resilience and collective community development. The initiative underscores the Foundation’s belief that sustainable societal progress is rooted in physical well-being, enlightened thinking and active civic engagement.
The event is set to begin at 6:00am, with participants running along the Ajagba–Kiribo route. Organisers described the route as symbolic, reflecting a journey of perseverance, endurance and achievement.
The flagship 10-kilometre road race will feature both elite athletes and community runners, with equal opportunities for male and female competitors. To reinforce inclusivity and competitiveness, the Sowore Foundation has announced substantial cash rewards. Winners of the 10KM race will receive ₦1,000,000 for first place, ₦750,000 for second place and ₦500,000 for third place in both male and female categories.
In addition, a 5-kilometre race has been introduced to encourage wider participation, especially among youths and emerging talents. Prizes for the 5KM race include ₦500,000 for first place, ₦350,000 for second place and ₦200,000 for third place.
The Kiribo Road Race reflects the broader philosophy associated with Omoyele Sowore’s movement, which places emphasis on human dignity, physical fitness, discipline and collective progress. By starting the year with a community-focused sporting event, organisers say the race sends a strong message that meaningful transformation begins with concrete action.
As runners line up at the starting point and residents gather in support, Kiribo is expected to become more than a host community, but a symbol of unity, hope and purposeful engagement, setting a proactive tone for the new year.
