Worsening Insecurity: Former President Finally Arrested
Bolsonaro was found guilty in September of planning a military coup and was sentenced to more than 27 years in prison. However, he has been staying at home under house arrest while he appeals the case.
Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered his arrest after “new facts” suggested Bolsonaro might try to run away. Officials said he tried to tamper with his ankle monitor and that a public gathering called by his son could help him escape.
The monitoring centre reported that Bolsonaro may have tried to break his electronic ankle bracelet to make an escape attempt. Justice Moraes said the protest planned by his son could create “confusion” that would make it easier for Bolsonaro to flee.
His son, Senator FlΓ‘vio Bolsonaro, had asked supporters on social media to gather outside his father’s home on Saturday night. He told them to come out and “fight” for the country and to pray for Bolsonaro’s health and for “the return of democracy”.
The court also mentioned that Bolsonaro might try to run into a nearby embassy to seek asylum, as investigators discovered he had previously discussed this option.
