A 14-year-old girl has been caught in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, after allegedly stealing ₦150,000 from her parents to buy a phone for her boyfriend.

According to community sources, the teenager confessed that “love pushed her” into the act, hoping the gift would “prove her affection.” But as the elders say, “the hand that steals honey must lick ants.”

Her parents, shocked by the incident, described it as a rude awakening to the dangers of youthful infatuation and peer pressure. Neighbours also lamented the moral decay among some youths, saying “when the child dances naked in the market square, it is the family that feels the shame.”

The case, now under community intervention, serves as a cautionary tale that “love without wisdom is a ship without a compass.”

As one elder remarked, “Parents must watch their children closely—because a small fire, if ignored, can burn down a house."
