Like a plot lifted straight from a political thriller, new details have emerged about an assassination attempt on Lt. A.M. Yarima, the young Nigerian Navy officer who recently locked horns with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
According to military insiders, Yarima narrowly escaped the jaws of death on Sunday evening after being trailed by men “dressed in black like shadows with no names,” riding in two unmarked Hilux vans. The mysterious vehicles reportedly followed him from the NIPCO Filling Station off the Line Expressway to Gado Nasco Way—a silent pursuit that could have turned deadly.
Realizing he had become “a sheep in the lion’s path,” Yarima reportedly pulled off a “strategic maneuver” and escaped the trail around 6:30 p.m. The incident, now the subject of a serious military investigation, is being handled with “gloves of caution,” as authorities keep further details close to the chest.
This unnerving development comes just days after a fiery confrontation between Lt. Yarima and the FCT Minister over a disputed land in Gaduwa District. The clash—captured on video—spread across the country like wildfire in harmattan, sparking national debate and forcing the Presidency to halt the controversial demolition exercise.
In the wake of the standoff, military veterans across Nigeria stood firmly behind Yarima, chastising Wike for “calling an officer a fool in broad daylight.”
Spokesman for the Coalition of Retired Veterans, Abiodun Durowaiye-Herberts, warned that ex-service members would “storm the Minister’s office like a hive of angry bees” if Yarima faced any punishment.
He stressed that soldiers serve Nigeria, not the whims of any public official—reminding the nation that “a tree does not make a forest, but a leader’s words can shake it.”
Meanwhile, Minister of Defence Mohammad Badaru Abubakar has assured Nigerians that no officer acting within the law would be thrown under the bus.
