Stakeholders Dismiss Demonstrators as Impostors
A protest erupted at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday, as hundreds of demonstrators demanded justice for alleged victims of kidnapping, torture, and unlawful detention purportedly linked to the Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), Chief Dennis Otuaro, and former Niger Delta militant leader, High Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo.
Carrying placards with bold inscriptions such as “Sack Dennis Otuaro Now!”, “Running Private Prisons is a Crime Against Humanity!”, and “Free Bala Karowei, Free Charles Kubrobo!”, the protesters accused Otuaro and Tompolo of operating what they described as “private detention camps.”
However, in a swift response, the Warri Ijaw Stakeholders Group issued a strongly worded statement condemning the demonstration, describing it as “shameful, stage-managed, and politically motivated.”
The statement, signed by Tariwei Goodman Ebi (Chairman) and Ebiwie Godfrey (Secretary), alleged that the protest was orchestrated by one Mr. Jude Gbaboyor, who they accused of hiring “outsiders — mostly Hausa youths and non-Niger Deltans — to stage a fake protest aimed at discrediting respected Niger Delta leaders.”
According to the stakeholders, the protest was “a disgrace and an insult to the collective intelligence and unity of the Niger Delta people,” adding that it reflected “desperation, deceit, and a total disconnect from the true aspirations of the region.”
‘Tompolo, Otuaro, Tonlagha Are Pillars of Peace and Progress’
The group hailed Tompolo as a “pillar of peace, progress, and development” who has over the years contributed immensely to stabilizing the creeks, empowering youths, and protecting vital national assets.
They also commended Chief (Dr.) Dennis Otuaro, the PAP Administrator, for his “renewed direction, integrity, and transparency,” noting that under his leadership, “educational and training opportunities for ex-agitators have reached record levels since the inception of the Amnesty Programme.”
Similarly, Mathew Tonlagha was praised for his consistent contributions to peacebuilding, dialogue, and youth empowerment across the Niger Delta region.
‘A Protest Without Legitimacy’
The stakeholders accused Gbaboyor of pursuing a “self-serving agenda” rather than the collective interest of the Niger Delta, dismissing the protest as “illegitimate, baseless, and devoid of grassroots support.”
“For Jude Gbaboyor to sponsor rented crowds — people with no roots, no understanding, and no stake in our region — to protest against these distinguished sons of the Niger Delta is the height of irresponsibility and deceit,” the group stated.
They called on the Federal Government, media, and the general public to “disregard the stage-managed protest and its sponsors,” emphasizing that “authentic Niger Delta voices resolve disputes through dialogue, mutual respect, and unity — not by importing outsiders to fight family matters.”
“Those who truly represent the Niger Delta do not fight their brothers with strangers. We address our issues as one family, guided by dialogue and shared purpose,” the group concluded.
