Exclusive Principal Representative of Ebocha Community and Youth Leader demands Justice Over alleged Abduction, Detention by Oando Security Operatives, Others.

The Ebocha Community Principal Representative and National Executive President of the Ebocha  Youth Association, Prince (Engr.) Ernest Onwuadi, who is also the direct Contactman of the Umu-Deyiogidi Unit of Umuohu-Ebocha, the direct landlords of the Ebocha Oil
Center and environs of other oil facilities operating by Oando Energy Resources Plc,  has called for justice following his alleged abduction and unlawful detention by security operatives linked to Oando Energy Resources Plc after a peaceful protest at the Ebocha Oil Center in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State.

In a letter forwarded to Niger Delta Voice Reporters, according to Onwuadi, the peaceful demonstration held on January 21, 2025, was organized to urge the management of Oando Energy Resources Plc to comply with a National Assembly resolution and Rivers State High Court judgment in favour of the Ebocha community. The resolutions reportedly addressed issues of environmental degradation, neglect, and deprivation of the community’s rights arising from oil operations previously managed by Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC) and now acquired by Oando.

He alleged that the protest, which was peaceful and nonviolent, was disrupted by armed thugs and company security officials who assaulted protesters, abducted him, and handed him over to the Department of Security Services (DSS) in Imo State, instead of the Rivers State Command. Onwuadi claimed he was unlawfully detained for two months under inhumane conditions, suffering serious health and economic losses.

Onwuadi further accused Oando of flouting legislative and judicial directives, refusing to honour official invitations from government authorities—including the Rivers State Police Command and the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions—regarding the long-standing disputes with the Ebocha community. He lamented that despite several letters from the National Assembly dated between 2019 and 2024, the company has failed to engage in meaningful dialogue or address the environmental and social damages caused by recurrent oil spills, including one recorded in July 2024 that reportedly affected his family’s land in Agbontutu swamp.

Describing the company’s actions as “reckless, abusive, and oppressive,” Onwuadi insisted that his abduction and detention were a deliberate plot to silence his leadership, mandate and derail the community’s demand for justice and fair compensation. He appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Attorney General of the Federation, and the National Security Adviser to intervene urgently and ensure the enforcement of the National Assembly resolution and Rivers State High Court judgment in favour of the Ebocha community.

The Exclusive Principal Representative of the community and National Executive President of the Ebocha Youth Association also called on human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO), Environmental Rights Action (ERA/FOEN), Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), and other civil society groups in the Niger Delta and across Nigeria to urgently intervene, investigate the matter, and ensure justice is served.

“The Ebocha people have suffered years of neglect and environmental devastation. I call on the Federal Government, human rights bodies, and relevant authorities to ensure justice, peace, and fairness for my community,” Onwuadi said.

He reaffirmed his commitment to peaceful advocacy, stressing that the people of Ebocha deserve respect, recognition, and rightful compensation as direct landlords of the oil-rich area.
