The West African nation of Guinea-Bissau on Thursday announced the installation of General Horta Inta-A as transitional president for a one-year period, according to state broadcaster TGB. The development comes amid widespread uncertainty following an alleged coup shortly after the presidential elections.

Eyewitnesses told the German Press Agency (dpa) that the streets of the capital, Bissau, were deserted, with soldiers deployed at strategic locations across the city.

The announcement followed a statement by a group of military officers on Wednesday claiming they had taken control of the country. The officers alleged that they had uncovered a plot to rig the presidential election and destabilise the nation, involving certain politicians and a drug trafficker.

Guinea-Bissau has long been identified as a major transit hub for cocaine smuggled from Latin America to Europe.

Ousted President Umaro Sissoco EmbalΓ³ told a French media outlet that he had been detained by the military but had not been harmed. The military is also reported to have detained his main challenger, Fernando Dias.

Both EmbalΓ³ and Dias had declared themselves winners of Sunday’s presidential election, although official results have not yet been released.

Since gaining independence from Portugal in 1974, Guinea-Bissau has experienced numerous coups and attempted coups, contributing to decades of political instability.
