There was jubilation across the Niger Delta on Thursday as the Federal Government flagged off its Boat Ferry Service Project aimed at improving water transport and boosting economic activities in riverine communities.
The project, initiated by the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, will provide safe and affordable ferry services across Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Ondo, and Edo States.
Speaking at the launch in Yenagoa, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, said the project would bridge transportation gaps and connect remote areas to the regional economy.
“This initiative is about inclusion. Our riverine communities have long been cut off from the rest of the country due to poor infrastructure. We are determined to change that,” Oyetola said.
Residents have hailed the development, describing it as a welcome relief.
A youth leader in Oporoza, Delta State, Comrade Godspower Ebikeme, said the ferries will reduce accidents and travel stress.
“Many lives have been lost using unsafe boats. With standard ferries, safety will improve,” he said.
Similarly, Mrs. Ebiere Ekpenyong, a trader from Brass, Bayelsa State, said the service would cut transport costs for small businesses.
“We spend a lot on speedboats to move our goods. This new service will make life easier,” she added.
A transport analyst, Dr. Timi Abam, described the move as a “game-changer” that could expand tourism and job creation if well-managed.
However, some leaders urged the government to involve local youths and traditional institutions in operations to ensure sustainability.
Chief Ayibaemi Pere of Rivers State warned, “If communities are not carried along, the project may face challenges like past ones.”
The ferry scheme is part of the Niger Delta Transport Revitalization Plan, which also includes rehabilitation of jetties, terminals, and maritime safety facilities.
Residents say they hope the initiative marks a new dawn for development in the oil-rich region.
