Ondo Intel: DSS Raises Alarm Over Imminent ISWAP Attack in Ondo State
The Department of State Services (DSS) has issued a security alert warning of a possible imminent attack by the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in parts of Ondo State.
According to a confidential memo dated October 20, 2025 and addressed to the Commander of the 32 Artillery Brigade, Akure, the DSS disclosed that intelligence reports indicate ongoing terrorist surveillance activities in several communities within the state. The document, signed by H.I. Kana, Director of Security for the DSS in Ondo, lists Oyin-Akoko, Eriti-Akoko (Akoko North-West LGA), and Owo town (Owo LGA) as potential targets.
The memo warns that suspected ISWAP members have begun monitoring “soft targets” in the identified locations, with the intention of carrying out coordinated attacks if security lapses are detected. The agency urged the military and other security formations to scale up surveillance, reinforce deployment, and heighten alertness to prevent loss of lives and property.
Government Responds, Urges Calm
Reacting to the leaked memo, the Ondo State Government assured residents that there is no cause for panic. Commissioner for Information, Idowu Ajanaku, described the DSS report as part of routine intelligence exchanges among security institutions. He stated that the government is working closely with the DSS, the Police, and other security agencies to ensure the safety of citizens.
Similarly, the Ondo State Police Command confirmed that a high-level security meeting has been held with traditional rulers, community leaders, and security stakeholders in the Akoko region to reinforce early warning systems and intensify patrols in border communities.
Background of Rising Security Concerns
The warning comes against the backdrop of the June 2022 attack on St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, where dozens were killed in an incident linked to ISWAP. The latest alert has revived concerns over the spread of terrorist activities beyond Nigeria’s northeast into the southwest and north-central regions.
Public Advised to Stay Vigilant
Authorities have called on residents, especially in the affected communities, to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements or persons to security agencies. The government emphasized that collaborative vigilance remains key to preventing terror attacks.
